New Release Round-Up 05-26-15

New Releases 26 May 2015

ALLEN STONE - Radius - Capitol
On his third full-length album, singer/songwriter Allen Stone proves himself deeply devoted to making uncompromisingly soulful music that transcends all pop convention. Stone's debut for Capitol Records, Radius marks the follow-up to the Chewelah, Washington-bred 28-year-old s self-released and self-titled sophomore effort, a 2011 album that climbed to the top 10 on Billboard s Heatseekers chart and gained acclaim from renowned rock critic Ann Powers (whose NPR review hailed Allen Stone as meant for those of us who like our R&B slightly unkempt and exceedingly feelingful ). Made in collaboration with Swedish soul singer/songwriter/phenom Magnus Tingsek, Stone s latest batch of songs capture the warm energy of that creative connection and transport the listener to a higher and more exalted plane..

LIFEHOUSE - Out Of The Wasteland - Ironworks Music
For Lifehouse, Out Of The Wasteland is a culmination of their life’s work, a new chapter that serves as the pay-off for having the patience to reconnect with the musical and personal chemistry that took them to the top. “We were at crossroads, and it definitely could have gone a different way,” says Jason Wade. “Going through changes and restarting a brand new season in your life and your career can be scary. But I think everybody is really happy that right now, our hearts are in the right place creatively.”

THE VACCINES - English Graffiti - Sony
The Vaccines 'English Graffiti,' is their first release in three years. The album was recorded in upstate New York, and the 11-song collection is the UK foursome's most accomplished work to date. 'English Graffiti' was produced David Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Tame Impala, MGMT) and Cole MGN (Ariel Pink, Beck).

Turbowolf - Two Hands

Turbowolf - Two HandsTURBOWOLF - Two Hands - SpinefarmTurbowolf - Two Hands
Welcome to 2015: the year of the wolf.
Since their formation in 2008, the Bristolian riff-ragers have melted minds with their signature brand of patchouli-drenched punk rock fury. Their live rituals are the stuff of legend: a trapdoor into the cosmic beyond via the uncharted depths of your mind, sound-tracked by the red hot fuzz of crackling speakers and overloaded channels.  After wrapping up a hugely successful last year, which included headlining Live Nation’s ‘Download Freezes Over’ tour as well as crushing stages with chart-toppers Royal Blood, the quartet are set to unleash second album ‘Two Hands’ and excitement in the camp is infectious…  “We were doing it kinda ghetto before this point,” laughs guitarist Andy Ghosh. “We did the exact same thing in terms of recording and writing, but this time we’re a bit older and wiser. It’s just me and Chris making up weird shit! But this time round, we had the opportunity to produce it with Tom Dalgety [Band Of Skulls, Opeth, Royal Blood], who’s an absolute legend, and just really capture it. We have a hard sound to record: everything’s the same frequency just piled on top of each other. White noise, no… brown noise!”

Eilen Jewell - Sundown Over Ghost Town

Eilen Jewell - Sundown Over Ghost TownEILEN JEWELL - Sundown Over Ghost Town - Signature SoundsEilen Jewell - Sundown Over Ghost Town
Honesty, confidence, and respect permeate Eilen Jewell's music, dating back to her self-released Boundary County album in 2006. Since then, the Boise native has recorded five studio albums for Signature Sounds with her road-tested touring band, and two more as a member of the Boston-based gospel-charged Sacred Shakers, which includes that well-oiled band at its core.  As hard as it is to categorize Jewell's music terms like alt-country, roots-rock, country-noir, and Americana get used a lot it's even harder not to become thoroughly enraptured by the singer/songwriter's powerful versatility, musical stories, and images. And that gorgeous voice makes you feel like she's singing just for you, out on the breezy back porch or by a crackling campfire. She does so much, so well.  Sundown Over Ghost Town's twelve original songs reflect on recent changes in Jewell's life including the birth of her first child and returning to her hometown of Boise, Idaho. The music has a western feel evoking wide open spaces with the generous use of pedal steel and organ.

That ethos remains intact with American Spring, their Spinefarm Records debut.  American Spring packaging includes essays, personal liner notes, & further information behind the driving forces of each song, detailing ways for us all to take action against injustice in the world.  The American Spring is now!

HOT CHIP - Why Make Sense? - Domino
With Why Make Sense?, Hot Chip restate their intentions as a band and redefine the very things that made them relevant in the first place. It shuns modernist dancefloor tropes in order to flick through the dusty corners of the band’s teenage record collections. Alternately jarring and chaotic, pared back, thundering, then pulsating and gloriously mellifluous, the album confidently displays its influences.

New Releases - 12 May 2015

RHETT MILLER WITH BLACK PRAIRIE - The Traveler - ATO Records
Rhett Miller, lead singer of boozy raucous rockers The Old 97 s, releases his new solo album 'The Traveler'. Recorded with Black Prairie (members of The Decemberists ) and produced by Chris Funk, The Traveler showcases a relentless and seemingly ageless songwriter honed by years on the road.

EMMYLOU HARRIS & RODNEY CROWELL - The Travelling Kind - Nonesuch
The Travelling Kind follows the longtime friends' first duet album, 2013's Old Yellow Moon, which won Best Americana Album at the 56th annual Grammy Awards as well as two awards at the 2013 Americana Music Association Honors & Awards Show, for Album of the Year and Duo/Group of the Year. The album also debuted at #4 on the Billboard's Top Country Albums chart.

SURFER BLOOD - 1000 Palms - Joyful Noise Records
1000 Palms marks a return to Surfer Blood's DIY ethos. Abandoning the big time studio, the band decided to head back home to self-record and self-produce their third full-length album. Free of major-label-influence, Surfer Blood has delivered a uniquely compelling album, unlike anything in their catalog. The story of 1000 Palms began on January 1st 2014, after playing a New Year's show in Portland, OR. The band decided to stick around for the rest of the month, renting a practice space and sorting through a backlog of ideas. By February, as their lease ran out, Surfer Blood had recorded demos for most of the tracks that are now featured on their third LP.

SNOOP DOGG - Bush - Sony
Snoop Dogg's new album is Bush, available this week. The album is entirely produced by friend, fellow-innovator, and Grammy Award-winner Pharrell Williams, and is the latest offering from one of music's most prolific and revered trendsetters.

Incubus went on to release six studio albums on the Epic/Immortal label (the last three produced by Brendan O Brien), achieving RIAA gold, platinum and multi-platinum success; as well as five live albums. Four of their songs have hit #1 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart, including Drive (2000, also Top 10 Pop), Megalo-maniac (2003), Anna-Molly (2006), and Love Hurts (2008).

Roisin Murphy - Hairless Toys

Roisin Murphy - Hairless ToysROISIN MURPHY - Hairless Toys - PIAS America Roisin Murphy - Hairless Toys
Formerly of early ‘00s dance-pop favorites Moloko and creator of some of that decade’s most adventurous solo electronic music albums, the unmistakable Rosin Murphy returns with her new album Hairless Toys. For once the clichés of “eager anticipation” and “welcome return” are not misplaced. Her first album in 8 years, Hairless Toys is a career defining tour de force. Tipping its hat to the dark disco of European house music, Casablanca Records and Grace Jones, while seamlessly taking in the freedom and organic spirit of jazz and gospel.

We hit our goal thanks to all of you! We are going to keep it going till Saturday when our Kickstarter ends. Today we are serving refreshments from 3 till 7pm compliments of Migration Brewing and New Belgium. We have the Lonely Wild playing a free live performance at 6pm. Greg Glover and Biscuit will be on hand to say hello. Keep spreading the word and we will have some exciting changes for you to see in the near future.

Whats next? The amount above our goal will go to improvements to the store. We have the ceramic tile roof which needs repaired too. We might get lucky and be able to do that roof also. After Record Store Day, we will begin plans to re- roof the store and begin with the plans for the coffee, beer and wine bar.

We will be sending out reward certificate in April and will have the T-shirts and Pint Glasses in house by May 1st. I will contact all of you in the near future with other rewards. The private dinner concert will be at our good friend Tony Starlights in the next couple months. I look forward to taking those backers to a show that were able to make that level of donation also. I promise we will have a great night! Plus the private house concerts....I'll make it a great night for you with one of Portland's finest talents.
