GENRE: FOLK / COUNTRY| NEW RELEASE: “BARRY WALKER JR.”
Portland, Oregon-based singer-songwriter Barry Walker Jr. is preparing to release his self-titled full-length album, a twelve-track collection of folk/country/experimental songs recorded over the span of several years at various studios in various cities and states.
Barry Walker Jr. (Snake Handler/Deer Lodge Records) is a collage from disparate places and times: Corvallis, Portland, Seattle, western Kentucky; 2008 - 2015. “American folk music" alongside pedal steel experiments and country-rock songs, electronic pop, ecstatic guitar music, bugs, and frogs. It's Barry's first album since his acclaimed 2012 cassette, Banjo Knife - and fourth album overall (2013’s Barry Walker and the Tanks and 2013’s Sinthaxis).
Of his self-titled album, Barry says, “I was getting heavily into what [my wife and I] called ‘western exotica’ at the time, which was an experimental wrangling of exotica and country/folk music. We were getting high off records by people like Elisabeth Waldo, Eden Ahbez, Mike Cooper, and obviously the ‘holy trinity’ of the genre: Baxter, Denny, and Lyman (credit also to archivist and visual artist Evan Crankshaw for his exploits during this period). Anyway, several of the instrumental songs on the Barry Walker Jr. LP are direct result of being in this zone. These songs were mostly recorded in whatever house I was living in at the time and provide a nice counterpoint to the more pro-sounding studio cuts.”
